Too many geologists?

At the end of 2014, as universities were beginning the admissions process for 2015, Chile’s College of Geologists took the industry by surprise with a full page advert in the Las Ultimas Noticias, calling on would-be students to think twice before commencing a geology decree.

The organization noted that the number of institutions teaching geology courses has risen from just three in the 1990s (University of Chile, University of Concepcion and Universidad Catolica del Norte) to 12 today (some two and even three campuses), but the mining industry where most geologists work was entering a period of stagnation, with many exploration and mine projects halted or closed.
