Chile is home to around 23,000km2 of glaciers, equivalent to 80% of the glaciers in South America. The vast majority, measured by surface area, are located in Regions XI and XII, home to the giant North and South Ice Fields. Although less common and smaller the further north one goes, glaciers are critical sources of water to many valleys in northern and central Chile, especially in years when the rains fail.
