New ways of seeing

October 2015: A new technology for scanning mineral samples could transform geologists understanding of major mineral deposits.

By measuring infrared reflections, spectroscopy can quickly and accurately identify a wide range of minerals and compounds. It has been used in a wide applications, from microelectronics to medicine, for several decades but it is only in the last 20 years or so that the mining industry has begun to adopt it.
