August 2016:  In an effort to support Chile’s small and medium-scale mining industry through the crisis triggered by the end of the super cycle in commodity prices, the Ministry of Mines, state mining development agency ENAMI, mining and geology service SERNAGEOMIN, the British Geological Survey and the UK satellite applications center Catapult have signed an agreement to develop an innovative initiative.

The project, named Hephaestus and estimated to cost GBP3.272M (US$4.9M), will develop a software which will use satellite images to define the location of copper, gold and silver deposits, monitor tailings deposits and modernize ENAMI’s production processes.
