Kinross: Closure of wells could paralyze Maricunga

May 2016: Kinross Gold (TSX: K), one of the world’s largest gold producers, is fighting a sanction from environmental regulator SMA ordering it to halt extraction from three wells which supply its Maricunga mine in Region III. The SMA says K is responsible for drying 69h of the Valle Ancho wetland, describing the damage as “practically irreversible”.

“These wetlands lie outside the area of influence of the Maricunga mine – the extraction wells are 9 kilometers S of the wetland,” the company told CER
