Bachelet replaces head of SERNAGEOMIN
Octubre 2016: Mario Pereira Arredondo was named interim national director of mining and geology service SERNAGEOMIN after President Michelle Bachelet announced that Rodrigo Alvarez Seguel was stepping down after more than two years in the post.
The change was one of a series of modifications to the administration unveiled by the president after the ruling Nueva Mayoria coalition suffered a heavy defeat in municipal elections which took place on October 23rd.
As well as Alvarez, the president also named replaced six undersecretaries (Crime Prevention, General Secretary of the Presidency, Justice, Housing and Urbanism, Social Welfare and Telecommunications) and two service directors (at drug and alcohol rehabilitation service SENDA and communications secretariat Secom).
In a message on his twitter account, Alvarez thanked the president for the trust placed in him.
“I leave happy for the progress made by Sernageomin and to on new challenges,” the former official said.
Pereira was previously deputy director for geology at SERNAGOMIN, a post he assumed in May last year, and an academic in the Faculty of Engineering and Geological Sciences at the Catholic University of the North in Copiapo, Region III.
The change just hours after government spokesman Marcelo Diaz a second cabinet reshuffle just one week after the president made three changes to her cabinet ahead of the recent elections.
